There is no school tomorrow for students, as there is a Professional Development day for teachers. Enjoy the day off! We have continued to work through our multiplication strategies this week and the students have been extremely successful! They have all asked for a multiplication mini-booklet to be sent home so check their backpacks for that on Monday. Have a great long weekend!

January 27th 2021

Today we got to go outside for both morning recess and lunch recess! The kids were happy to go outside, and it was a good reminder to bring all winter gear to school as it was still quite cold and snow outside today! In science, we learned about animal adaptations, wrote about and shared our animal habitats that we created.  In math, we continued working through our multiplication unit, and the students have become quite confident with arrays. Next we will be moving onto number lines! Reminders/Updates - please remember to send all winter gear to school! - report cards will be available for viewing on February 1st.

We had to stay inside today due to cold temperatures with windchill. Compared to yesterday, the students did a fabulous job of keeping their energy in check and using the strategies that they know to keep themselves calm. We came up with strategies this morning to stay calm and it started our day off on the right foot! In math, we began to work on arrays for multiplication. The students understood it right away and were very successful! We had a fabulous day today - hopefully students can go outside tomorrow and get some fresh air!

January 25th 2021

Wow! What a day! Today was our first indoor recess and indoor lunch of the year. Hopefully the rest of the week was a little bit warmer. Staying indoors posed a challenge to us in terms of our energy levels. We did do lots of movement breaks throughout the day to break up the sitting and get our energy out! In math we did a bit more practice with the grouping method. The students have this down pat so tomorrow we will be working on arrays. I am impressed with the students' skills in multiplication. We will also be practicing basic facts up to 5x5 at home, so feel free to work through those and practice at home. We had some class time to finish up our habitats today. This week we will be writing about them and describing what is in them. REMINDERS/UPDATES -report cards will be available for viewing online February 1st. -with the cold weather coming in abruptly, please remember to send all winter gear to school with your child. At temperatures of -20 or warmer, we still go outside fo...

Happy Friday! Another week gone by! We spent most of our day today working on our animal habitats that we have been looking forward to all week! Students have been very creative with classroom materials as well as anything they brought from home to make amazing animal habitats! Take a look at some photos below, and see if you can figure out what type of habitat each one is! Reminders/Updates: - report cards will be digital this year, available for viewing beginning February 1st, 2021.

January 21st 2021

Happy Thursday! Tomorrow is the day that we have all been looking forward to - habitat building day! Students will be provided with paper and some crafting materials that I have in my supply closet. I will be making toothpicks, pipecleaners, popsicle sticks, and straws available to use, as well as a small supply of markers and any materials they have in their desks. If they would like to bring something from home to help with their project, they are welcome to do so, as long as it is something that can fit in a Ziploc bag (i.e., please do not send a large bag of materials). Students will be provided with a rubric of what constitutes a 1, 2, 3 or 4 to help them formulate their projects. Students have been MUCH more successful with their play outside, using polite language and getting along with their peers. They seem to have taken our class conversations to heart about thinking about the way that words and actions may make another person feel. Way to go grade 3s!

January 20th 2021

Happy Wednesday! Today in science, we researched specific habitats that we will be building on Friday. Students made a plan about things that they will include in their habitats based on what they learned. In math, we began to learn about the grouping method for multiplication, and related it back to the repeated addition method that we already learned over the last couple of days. The students seem to be really getting it, which is awesome! Based on feedback over the last few days from students and supervisors, we had a great class discussion today addressing how we are making people feel when we are outside at recess and lunch. We talked about ways that we can stay calm when angry or upset, without name calling or saying rude words that hurt people's feelings. The students came up with many ways that they can politely express their feelings. Some examples were: - take a break and go for a walk - tell the person that you just need a minute and will come back when you are ready - e...

This morning we learned about the different parts of a rainforest! We were learning about it in our Peru unit for social studies, however it also works very well with our science unit on habitats! We discussed our habitat projects this morning. The students are aware of what materials will be available to them and are excited to begin the project! In math, we continued working on multiplication as repeated addition. The students seemed to have a great grasp on this today, so we will likely move onto the grouping method tomorrow. We will continue to revisit all methods of multiplication throughout the unit! Feel free to begin practice multiplication basic facts up to 5x5 at home. We did Daily 5 rotations today. The students did fairly well on working independently, however they are going to make sure that they have paid very close attention to instructions next time so that they can get straight to work when it is time! Have a nice evening!

January 18th 2021

Happy Monday! We started out our day this morning doing research on various animal habitats. We will be doing other activities related to this throughout the week, and hopefully by Friday we will be able to start working on our animal habitats! I will be providing paper for the animal habitats, which students can use to form into 3D creations for their habitats. If there is anything else that they would like to use, it is suggested that they bring it from home. The materials that we have at school will definitely suffice, so no need to run out and purchase anything if you do not want to! Today in math we began learning about multiplication as repeated addition. For example, 4x3 could be displayed at 4+4+4 or 3+3+3+3. We will continue to work on this tomorrow. In language arts we worked on different combinations that make the long "o" sound, including ow, oa, words that end in -ost and words that end in -old. Some words that you could use as spelling words this week are: -toas...

We made it through the first week back after the extended break! Thank you to all parents for sending back learning materials that were sent home. I was very impressed with how quickly everything came back. Today we wrote our show what you know for 3D shapes. While I have not looked through all of them yet, it appears as though students did quite well and have a solid understanding. Next week, we will be doing research on different habitats that foster animal life. Later in the week, we will be working to create our own 3D habitats. I will provide materials, however if students feel that they would like anything extra, they will be encouraged to bring it from home. I will provide more details on this next week, but I am very excited! Have a great weekend! REMINDERS/UPDATES - This week, many students have been bringing toys to school. Please ensure that your child is not bringing toys to school, as they can be a great distraction to learning and are required to stay at home due to COVID...

January 14th 2021

Tomorrow we will be doing our show what you know for 3D Shapes! Next week, we will be moving onto multiplication! Earlier this week in science, we learned about how animal mothers meet their offspring's needs. Today, we learned all about animal mothers who abandon their babies and the reasons why they would do so. While sometimes it seemed a little bit harsh, we realized that the reasons for doing so were actually quite logical and reasonable! We also began to learn about different types of habitats and will be doing some research on those next week. We wrote our story outlines today to come up with a logical sequence of events for the beginning, middle, and end of our stories. We did a practice run activity, using picture prompts to create a beginning, middle and end for someone else's story and the students did a fabulous job! The first Flames game is this evening - Go Flames Go!

January 13th 2021

Today in math, we worked on the computer to complete a digital activity to determine the faces, vertices, and edges for given 3d objects. some students participated in a one-on-one shape sorting activity with me, and all students will hopefully have done this activity by the end of the week! On Friday, we will be completing our show what you know for this unit, and then moving onto multiplication. In language arts, we began a story mapping activity where we created a title, wrote out our setting and characters that we created on online learning, as well as created a problem and a solution. Tomorrow we will be creating out outlines, where we put our ideas into a comprehensive order using beginning, middle, and end. We completed our New Years reflection activity that we began yesterday. In social studies, we learned about the geographical regions of Peru! For all of you hockey fans, enjoy the first evening of the season tonight!

January 12th, 2021

We had a great second day back to school! We have had to incorporate lots of "movement breaks" into our day as the students are still getting back into the rhythm of being at school.  Today we did a New Years writing project where we wrote about three favourite memories from 2020, as well as listed out accomplishments from the year. It was great to see the students reflect on 2020 in a positive way. We will finish the last two pages of our writing project tomorrow.  Tomorrow we will be using the computers to do some math on our Google Classroom. We are working on shape and space, identifying the attributes of various 3D shapes and sorting them accordingly. Have a great evening!

January 11th, 2021

Welcome back to a new year of in-person learning! I am so excited to have everyone back. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to our week of online learning. I sincerely hope that the schedules and work provided were manageable for everyone. I know that this was yet another weird time for everyone involved, but I must say that I was so very impressed with the participation in lessons and the independence that students have achieved with navigating virtual meetings. We started out today with reminders about what needs to be done to keep everyone safe at school. The one that we seem to be struggling with the most is remaining facing forward in our desks, and not turning around to talk to the people behind us. Please have conversations with your child about the importance of remaining faced forward when at their desks to avoid the spread of germs.  We have started the process of marking at-home work together as a class. If your child did not bring their at-home learning...
