Happy Thursday! Today was our last Thursday of the school year! We worked on a "Magic Square" puzzle today where we had to work cooperatively with our peers to solve a puzzle about time, that felt IMPOSSIBLE to some of us! With perseverance and resilience, every single group solved the puzzle! We did some handwriting today of the letters "D", "F", "G" and "H". Students also wrote out and practiced a signature for themselves! In social studies, we learned from one of our elders about Metis legacy and we wrote about the type of legacy we would like to leave at Woodlands School. Have a great evening! REMINDERS/UPDATES Report cards will be available online, on MyCBE Powerschool beginning June 26th, 2021. The last day of school is June 29th, 2021.

June 23rd 2021

Today was the last Wednesday of the school year! Four more school days left! Today we had a long discussion with Mr. Miller regarding expectations of kindness and respect for the remainder of the school year. Students have spent a lot of time together in one place this year, so our goal for the next 4 days is to be as kind, understanding, respectful and patient as possible. We have continued to learn new letters in cursive writing. Today we learned letter U, B and C. Students are loving it and having a blast practicing writing words. We had the computers this morning where we worked on reading and math. Have a great evening! REMINDERS/UPDATES - student report cards will be available online only this year, starting on June 26th 2021 through MyCBE.

June 22nd 2021

Happy Tuesday! 5 more school days remaining! Today we learned four letters of the alphabet in cursive form. We learned a, e, i and o. Students for the most part loved practicing the letters and were trying to spell out other words as well! In math we did an interactive SmartBoard activity about the passage of time, mostly as a review. We went outside on a Haiku Hike, where we made observations on a "field notes" page and then turned it into a Haiku afterwards. Students got 5 extra minutes on the playground afterwards. Have a great evening!

Happy Monday! 6 school days left until summer break! This morning we had the opportunity to watch an Alberta Indigenous author read aloud a story that she wrote. She explained the meaning of the teachings. We had the computers this morning to finish off any remaining social studies research and to do a math activity related to the passage of time. In science, we went outside to complete a sound map, showing where we heard each sound in relation to ourselves, and how far away that sound was. We wrote in our journals this afternoon about our weekends. Sounds like students had a great time! Have a nice evening!

June 18th 2021

Happy Friday!  Today at 8:30am we watched a live event of an Indigenous elder discussing the summer solstice and the changes that occur to the land. Afterwards, we did a movement break and then watched the grade 1/2 assembly. We reviewed our morning work. You can find it in your child's backpack. Father's Day cards came home yesterday for those who completed it, and today for everyone who needed a bit more time. We glued some work into our scrapbooks and we played our new strategy game again today. Have a great weekend!

June 17th 2021

Happy Thursday! Only one Thursday left this school year! We did our show what you know for our science unit on hearing and sound today. We were not expecting to do it today, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, we needed to get it done! In social studies, we worked to complete our travel brochures on our selected countries. While most students were able to finish, some students found that they were still missing some information and will use the computers to find the remainder next week. We finished our Father's Day projects today and they have come home in backpacks. Please keep them in a safe place! In math, we began learning about the calendar and how many days in a month/week, how many weeks in a year, etc. Ask your child about the strategy game that we learned today that originated in India! Have a great evening!

Happy Wednesday! Only one Wednesday left in the school year! Today in language arts we learned more about syllables and how to break words into syllables. We also began to learn what homophones are (words that sound the same but mean different things). The students came up with lots of great examples. We began a project for Father's Day that students will be bringing home tomorrow! They worked very hard on them :). We had the computers this morning where we did some additional research on our countries to help us finish our brochures. Afterwards, students worked on some Mathletics activities related to the passage of time. We had a very busy day! Have a great evening!

June 15th 2021

Today in social studies we began taking our information from our research pages on our focus countries and creating our travel brochures. We found that we had some gaps in information, but we have the computers tomorrow so we will be able to look up some more! In math, we did a second, minute, hour sort cut and paste activity. We talked about a clock and how to tell if we are looking at the second, minute, or hour hand. In language arts we learned about Haiku poems and wrote a couple about aspects of spring! We came up with some lovely poems and practiced our syllables! We had a conversation today about appropriate activities outside. We discussed that sometimes things happen on the playground by accident, but if we are engaging in a safe activity they are less likely to occur. Have a great evening!

June 14th 2021

Happy Monday! We started off our day by writing in our journals about our weekends! Students have really improved on their paragraph writing! We worked on suffixes in phonics, which is just adding a word ending to a base word to change the meaning. In science we learned about animal hearing. Ask your child about echolocation. In math, we began our new unit on measurement of time by discussing seconds, minutes and hours. Have a great evening!

June 11th 2021

Happy Friday! There are only two and a bit weeks until summer break! We completed our Show What You Know on solving for a missing number in addition and subtraction questions. There are lots of rules with subtraction, but overall students seemed to do a great job! We reviewed our morning work. Please check your child's backpack to see how their skills in editing and revising have improved! We finished our read aloud on the residential school system today. Students have been so compassionate, intrigued, and inquisitive about the residential school system and we have been having some really great discussions on acceptance and kindness. Have a great weekend!

June 10th 2021

Happy Thursday! Only 2 more Thursdays left in the school year! Students will be completing their show what you know tomorrow for solving for a missing number in addition and subtraction equations. In social studies we completed our research on one of the four countries we have studied this year. Next week, we will work to turn it into travel brochure form to inform others about all that we learned of our country! In language arts, we completed our summaries about the book How to Eat Fried Worms and now we have officially completed our novel studies! Have a great evening!

June 9th 2021

Happy Wednesday! Today in science we brainstormed a list of ways to protect our ears. Each student chose one, and made a poster about it including the way to keep their hearing safe, and how it would help. In math we continued learning about how to solve for a missing number in an equation. Our show what you know is a little long, so we will work on it tomorrow and Friday. In language arts we learned about summarizing and completed a class summary about the story "When I Was Eight". Then students created their own summaries about the novel study How to Eat Fried Worms now that they are done the story. They made notes today, and tomorrow will turn it into a cohesive piece of writing!! We also did some more work with alliteration today and the kids have been having a great time coming up with their own tongue twisters! We had our last fire drill of the year today and the students did an excellent job, exiting and entering the building quickly and quietly a well as remaining qui...

June 7th 2021

Happy Monday! We started out this morning by sharing about our weekends and writing in our journals. We only have 3 more journal writing opportunities after today! In phonics, we learned about prefixes and what different prefixes mean. Ask your child what a prefix is and for some examples. In science we learned about different ways to protect your ears (and hearing) and drew seven ways to protect them. In math we learned how to solve for different missing numbers in a subtraction question. Depending on which number is missing, you have to solve the question a different way! Ask your child about the two ways! Have a great evening!

June 4th 2021

This morning we had a very important assembly to discuss the message of "every child matters" and what that means at Woodlands school. Students in room 14 have shown great interest in the residential school system and have been asking very important questions over the last week that have led to some meaningful discussions. Students wrote a phrase about kindness on an orange shirt which will be displayed on the windows of our school. Have a lovely weekend!

June 3rd 2021

Another beautiful day today! Students did another travel brochure scavenger hunt today in preparation for their travel brochure research project next week. We played some games related to hearing and sound on the Smartboard. The links to these games are available on google classroom for your child to use. We went to the learning commons after lunch where we did the next few chapters of our novel study. We then played some math games and completed our concrete poems when we were done the novel study. Have a great evening!

June 2nd 2021

Today in science we learned about decibals which are used for measuring sound. We learned how many decibels is safe and how many are unsafe. We made sound circles that some students chose to bring home, which shows particular sounds and their corresponding decibels. In math, we continued learning about how to find a missing addend. Students were great at showing their process! In language arts, we completed our phonics which was a contractions and compound words review. We also worked to complete our concrete leaf and flower poems, and must students are now finished. Ask your child about the game we played in gym. Have a great evening!

June 1st, 2021

It is hard to believe that it is already June! Many students were wearing orange today which was great to see! We had a fire drill today, and the students did amazing! They exited the building quickly and quietly, waited outside and entered the building quietly. Awesome! We will be starting a research project this week, where we will be choosing a city from a country that we have studied to create a travel brochure. We started today by looking through travel magazines to see what information they do and do not have in them. It was very fun! In math, we began to learn about using the opposite operation to solve an addition question that is missing an addend. For example: 4 + __ = 8 --> 8 - 4 = __ __ + 9 = 16 --> 16 - 9 = __ We will continue to work on this over the next week. In language arts, we created sound effect posters as well as flower shape poems that we will also add to our bulletin board display! Have a great evening!
