HAPPY FRIDAY! We have made it to Spring Break! Today we completed some art that the students will be bringing home. There were lots of steps but the final result was amazing! Check your child's backpack for their art as well as their graded morning work. I recommend taking this coming week to relax. However, if you are looking for something for your child to do school-wise over the break I would suggest having them complete some fractions activities on Mathletics or some basic facts activities under the "play" section. I have opened up Mathletics so all of this should be accessible to students. Remember, that this is a break! Have a wonderful break! Please remember that school resumes on Tuesday, April 6th 2021.

March 25th 2021

One more day until Spring Break!  We started out social studies by learning about more Peruvian goods and services. We learned that there are lots of people and not enough jobs. We are going to be doing a project after the break where we create jobs for the people of Peru using our knowledge (not for real, of course!) In math we completed pizza fractions and ice cream fractions. Ask your child about this activity!  In language arts we finished typing and illustrating our stories. Some students worked very hard but due to the length of their stories were not able to finish the typing portion. In these cases, I will finish the typing portion for the students so that they have a finished project. REMINDERS/UPDATES Tomorrow is a regular Friday. We are off for the week of March 29th-April 2nd, as well as March 5th for Easter.  Please remember that school resumes on Tuesday, April 6th.

March 24th 2021

Today in math we continued to work through our fractions and review the work that we have done so far. We are great at shading in given parts of a fraction, however we need to work on splitting different shapes up into EQUAL parts! In language arts, we worked on our good copies of our stories - we typed them up on the computers! We will have the computers tomorrow as well to finish them up. In social studies, we learned about tourism in Peru, which is their main industry. We will continue to look through other Peruvian industries tomorrow. REMINDERS/UPDATES - it is that time of year where we are all tired and ready for a break. We have been having a hard time following all COVID protocols in our classroom, in particular keeping our physical distance from our peers in lineups and outside. Please review the importance of COVID protocols with your child in keeping everyone safe.  - please remember that in the Spring, the weather is ever changing. Please make sure that students come pr...

Today in social studies we learned about other industries in India aside from farming. Next, we will move onto Peru! In math, we continued to work on fractions and shading in a given fraction within a shape. We will finish this off tomorrow, as well as complete a fraction pizza and fraction ice cream cones!  In language arts, we began learning about adverbs (describe how, where, when a verb takes place). We will continue to work on this throughout the week. We also worked through the editing process for the stories that we wrote. We will hopefully be done our stories by the end of this week! REMINDERS/UPDATES - please remember that while the afternoons/evenings are usually warmer now, the mornings are still chilly. It is important that students dress in layers to ensure they are equipped for any kind of spring weather!

March 22nd 2021

Happy Spring! Today in language arts we wrote our journals and we also learned the rules for adding the endings "s" or "es" onto the end of a verb. The rules are tricky, so we will continue to practice applying this knowledge over the week. Please see below for a picture of the rules as well as a list of words you could use to practice. In science we watched the Magic School Bus episode on structures and answered corresponding questions. In math we continued to work on our understanding of fractions. Students are very familiar with what a fraction, numerator and denominator are.  REMINDERS/UPDATES - with the spring weather upon us, students have been reminded that it is often cool in the morning and warmer in the afternoon. We have discussed the importance of dressing in layers so that they are prepared for all weather throughout the day. Students should continue to bring some form of jacket to school. Spelling List: for each base word, have the student apply the co...

Happy Friday! In class today we worked on finishing the rough draft of our stories. Next week we will begin the editing process! We graded our morning work today, and they are in backpacks for you to look at. The skills covered in this morning work are in line with what we are learning in writing. Please take some time to look over them and see how your child is doing with the skills covered. In math we completed a fractions mini-book. Ask your child what the words numerator and denominator mean! Have a great weekend, and enjoy the nice weather!

March 18th 2021

Wow! What a gorgeous day today! Take a look below at a couple of our clover masterpieces! We began today with a discussion about how we can show kindness to adults in the building as well as peers using our actions. Students responded extremely well and were very good listeners today! In math, we took a look at the following fractions that we completed earlier in the week. We discussed that many of these fractions are actually incorrect because the parts are not EQUAL! We then used our whiteboards to create equal sections in shapes. In language arts we learned more about base words and adding endings such as -ed and -ing. There are lots of rules for adding word endings, so ask your child which rules they remember! We continued to work on our rough drafts of our stories. Have a great evening and enjoy the sunshine!

March 17th 2021

This morning we came into class to see that the leprechauns did not get caught in our traps. But, they left us a nice note telling us that we should complete an art project this afternoon as a nice surprise! I will post some photos when they are completed tomorrow. We also did some writing today explaining why we are so lucky to go along with our art! We used pencil crayons, chalk pastels, and oil pastels. Enjoy the nice weather!

March 16th 2021

We finished our Leprechaun traps today! We will wait and see if any leprechauns make their way into our classroom this evening! In language arts, we mapped out our settings and began writing rough copies! In math, we divided various shapes into halves, thirds, fourths, and fifths. Take a look at the pictures below to see some of our leprechaun traps!

Happy Monday! Thank you to all parents who signed up for and attended the virtual parent teacher conferences. It was so nice to get to touch base with families again and discuss the learning of the students. Thank you also to all parents who sent recyclable materials with their children. Today we flipped our day around and did journals and phonics in the morning, leaving extra time for our building project this afternoon. In phonics we began learning about base words, and how to add endings to them properly (-ed and -ing). We learned that sometimes we can't just add "-ed" to the end because we might end up with a word like "droped", so instead we have to add an extra p to get "dropped". In math we began learning about fractions. We learned that a fraction means a part of a whole, a numerator is the number on the top and a denominator is the number on the bottom. We will continue to learn about this in the coming days. In science we began building the b...

There is no school for students tomorrow due to parent teacher conferences. Please make sure to check your email for the conference link. It will only work up to 5 minutes before your scheduled conference time. You will be entered into a waiting room, and admitted into the meeting once the previous meeting has concluded.  Looking forward to seeing everyone (virtually) at conferences! Many students brought in their recyclable materials today to store in the classroom so that they do not forget them on Monday. If your child did not bring in their recyclable materials today, please ensure that they have them with them on Monday so that we can all begin to build.  Have a great long weekend!

March 10th 2021

Today in science we learned about different types of fasteners. We learned that the type of fastener you would use would depend on the purpose. For example, you would not build a house using glue as a fastener. However, it can be even more simple than this - such as, you would not staple something together that you want to be able to take apart later, you would use a paperclip instead. We will continue to discuss fasteners next week with the building of our Leprechaun Traps. In language arts, we began planning for our next story. Students used their knowledge of the plot diagram to map out their stories. They were provided with a prompt to spark their creativity: "It all started with a magical pen". We also rolled "Story cubes" to give us some ideas, and students each chose 3 prompts from the story cubes that they wanted to incorporate into their stories. See the picture below. In math, we worked on multiplication and division word problems. The students were great...

March 9th, 2021

Today in social studies we began to learn about the economy in India. We learned that India is a very overpopulated country and therefore, they have struggles with poverty. We will continue to explore this further. In math, we began to learn how to complete word problems that involve multiplication and division as a challenge. We identified key words that signal whether you would need to multiply or divide, and went through the process of solving a couple of questions independently. Tomorrow we will try to independently work through a couple of questions. Next week, we will be beginning our unit on fractions. In language arts, we did our phonics that we skipped yesterday. We did a review of r-controlled vowels and the sounds of y (long e, long i, and y). There are no new spelling words because it was a review lesson. On Thursday we will begin learning about base words and endings, such as -ed and -ing. REMINDERS/UPDATES - please remember to book a parent teacher conference using MyCBE ...

March 8th 2021

Happy Monday! I created a blog post on Friday but forgot to push the "send" button - it is now there if you would like to look at it! Today in math we continued working through the process of solving word problems. See Last Thursday's blog post for the expected process of solving a word problem. In language arts we did not do phonics, we instead completed an International Women's Day activity!      We will do phonics tomorrow instead. We completed our journals today with a focus on adjectives and transition words.  In science we discussed what makes bridges strong. Ask your child what the words tension and compression mean, as well as the different types of bridges. REMINDERS/UPDATES - please book your virtual conference time for Thursday or Friday using MyCBE.  - please remember to collect recyclable items throughout this week for our building project. Each child can only use their own materials, so it is important that every child brings some items to work wit...

March 5th 2021

Happy Friday! Today we got to do an activity outside where we picked an object and came up with adjectives to describe the object using our sense of smell, touch, sight, and hearing. It was so nice to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, even though it was only for a short time! In math we continued working through solving word problems. Please see yesterday's blog post for a picture of the expectations regarding how to solve a word problem.  REMINDERS/UPDATES - parent teacher conferences are virtual again this time around, and are taking place on March 11th and 12th. 15 minute time slots can be booked through myCBE. - as per the email that went out yesterday regarding recycling, please begin to collect items that can fit into a grocery bag. Please do not send them to school until Monday, March 15th. Please do not send any glass objects.

March 4th 2021

Today in math we reviewed the process of solving word problems and completed some problems independently in our journals. See below for an example of the expectations for answering word problems! In language arts we did a fun activity where we interviewed a friend about the sequence of their prior evening, and placed the events on a timeline. Then, we put our information into full sentences and a wrote a story about our friend's evening, making sure to use a transition word at the beginning of each sentence. Then, we read our stories to our friends and made them laugh! REMINDERS/UPDATES - virtual parent teacher conferences are coming up on March 11th and 12th. 15 minute time slots can be booked through MyCBE. - please see the email sent home today regarding collecting recyclable materials from around the home.

March 3rd, 2021

Happy Wednesday! Today in social studies we began talking about Canadian economy, and what we are able to produce based on our types of land, etc. In math, we continued learning about the process of solving a word problem and did some more class examples. Tomorrow the students will work independently to show their understanding. In language arts we did more activities related to adjectives as well as transition/sequencing words. REMINDERS/UPDATES -parent teacher conferences are on March 11th and 12th. Timeslots can be booked on MyCBE.

March 2nd 2021

Today in math we began learning about how to solve a word problem that involves addition or subtraction. We looked at the different clue words that would tell us whether we should be adding or subtracting. Ask your child about what words signal addition and which ones signal subtraction! We will add multiplication and division into the mix in the weeks to come. In science we finished off comparing pictures of strong and weak structures, as well as discussed what makes them that way or improvements that could be made. We talked about the floods of 2013 and how most of our structures like roadways and bridges were able to survive with just minor repairs, but buildings like the Saddledome needed more work.  In language arts we continued to discuss adjectives. Students created a list of adjectives that describe themselves using inside and outside traits. We also started learning about sequencing words. We looked through our last journal entry, and wrote down the first word of each sent...

March 1st 2021

Wow! It is hard to believe that it is March already. We are 108 school days into the year and only have 73 school days left! Today in math we wrote our test for our division unit. The students seemed very confident with the material! In science we began learning about what makes a structure strong, what makes it weak, and that when it is weak it is actually dangerous to use. We will continue this learning over the coming weeks. In language arts we learned about r-controlled vowels including ar and or. Some words you could use to practice this spelling pattern are: - are - around - start - Walmart - snarl - blurt - purple - hurt - burst - burn
