Happy Friday! Our Show What You Know for division is coming up on Monday. Students have been encouraged to practice on Mathletics this weekend if they are not feeling confident. We learned a few new math game this week! Take a look at the ones that we have learned. Ask your child what their favourites are! Today marks the end of Kindness Month at Woodlands school, however we have discussed the fact that kindness should never end. Students wrote today based on the prompt: Kindness doesn't end in February! They had many good ideas of how they can continue to show kindness and care for others through their words and actions. Have a great weekend!

Today we did some review of our division strategies in preparation for our show what you know on Monday. Tomorrow we are going to play some math games to help reinforce our division skills. In language arts we began talking about adjectives. We will continue this discussion over the next week or so. Have a great evening!

There is NO PD DAY this Friday. I made a mistake in a previous blog post saying that there is a PD day this Friday, but there is not a PD day. Students are expected to be at school on Friday. Sorry for any confusion! In science today we experimented with and observed three more materials: cardboard, paper, and a paperclip to determine the benefits and functionality of different building materials. In math we learned about multiplication and division fact family triangles. We learned that just like with addition and subtraction, we can use the opposite operation to help us find a fact. Ask your child how they can use the triangle to help them with their multiplication and division facts. In language arts, we completed our Nounville shops. Take a look below for some pictures of what we completed. REMINDERS/UPDATES - today was pink shirt day! Thank you to all families for having your child wear something pink (or close to it, like red!) to show inclusivity and kindness and to stand up aga...

What a wild night of weather we had last night! It left a fresh layer of snow for us to play in today with the beautiful weather! In social studies we learned about Tunisian Date Palm Trees and how Tunisians grow, use and sell dates. In math we learned about division on a number line. This seems to be the easiest way for the students to divide so far.  In language arts, we created stores for Nounville! I will post pictures tomorrow of the final product! REMINDERS/UPDATES - tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day! Students are encouraged to wear a pink article of clothing or accessory to demonstrate inclusivity and kindness.

Today in science, we looked at a variety of materials in partners to determine the qualities that would make them good, or not so good, for building. We looked at three different types of plastic, and learned that they are all waterproof! So we now know that if we are building something that needs to stand up to water, plastic might be a good option! In math, we continued working on writing division sentences as repeated subtraction. The students seemed to have a good understanding of this and tomorrow we will be moving onto division on a number line. The show what you know will be next Monday. In language arts we completed phonics for r-controlled vowels and completed our journals. Some words that you could use for extra practice this week are as follows: - bird - third - stir - dirt - churn - burn - hurt - blurt - turtle - perch - verse - were - mother REMINDERS/UPDATES - Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday, February 24th 2021. All students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt or accessory...

Happy Friday! Today we started out by marking our morning work from this week. It has come home in students' backpacks. Please note that, depending on what time they get to school, students have a minimum of 15 minutes and maximum of about 25 minutes to complete each set of 5 questions. When marking "correct the sentences", I tell students that if they got most of the corrections correct, to mark it correct. However, there still may be mistakes within those sentences that are marked correct. In math, we used square tiles to practice division using the grouping and arrays method. Students are finding division to be much harder than multiplication so I would suggest utilizing Mathletics if you have spare time. Please see some photos below of what we did. Math work from the first term came home in backpacks today and do not need to be returned. We finished our window hearts today to provide encouragement to the community! Ours are not up on the windows yet, but make sure to ...

Today was Winter Walk Day! We stayed outside for an additional 15 minutes after morning recess and enjoyed some fresh air while walking in the field and chatting with our friends. What a beautiful day! In science, we began our unit on Building with a Variety of Materials. We watched a read aloud of the story The Three Little Pigs and discussed what we noticed about the three houses, and what we would do to each of them to help them stand up to the wolf. Students have brought home their science work from the first term. It does not need to be returned, but it may be used as a review of what students have completed so far. Ms. Gall came in today to read us a story called "Window Hearts". We created hearts that will go in the window of our school to help brighten the spirits of others! In math, we started learning about division as repeated subtraction. It is kind of like reverse skip counting! We continued to learn about proper and common nouns today. Hopefully, this will help ...

Happy 100th Day of School! It is hard to believe that we are well into the second half of our school year! Today we had a few students dress up as though they were 100 years old! We also did some fun hundred day activities that the students have brought home. The activities do not need to be sent back to school or completed, but if students choose to complete the remaining activities at home, they can. We reviewed using arrays for division today. This is a skill that many students could use additional practice with. We will be starting with reverse skip counting tomorrow as a strategy, but will review arrays again before the Show What you Know next Friday. In social studies we discussed Tunisian economy (farming). In language arts we began discussing proper and common nouns. Ask your child what the difference is between the two and how to tell them apart!

February 16th 2021

I hope that everyone had a wonderful and cozy long weekend! Tomorrow is the 100th day of classes this year! Students are welcome to dress up as though they are 100 years old, but we are asking that "extras" such as purses and canes be left at home. Anything that stays on the body is fine, such as jewelry! The weather was much warmer today so we were able to go outside for recess and lunch recess as well. It really helped with the energy levels in the classroom during learning! In social studies today we began talking about economy and what it means. We will begin discussing economy as it relates to Tunisia, Peru, India and Ukraine. In math, we learned how to do division using arrays. Division seems to be a bit more of a challenge than multiplication for most students, so it may be something to work on using Mathletics. In language arts we worked on phonics, with the sounds "oi and "oy". Some words you could use as a spelling list are: - boy - toy - annoy - loy...

February 9th 2021

Happy Tuesday! Today we started out our day by doing a review of our science unit on the Life Cycle of Animals. We played a game of Jeopardy as a review and the students did excellent! The show what you know is tomorrow morning. We continued working on division today with the equal groups method. We did a one-word-story this afternoon where each student added on a word to the story. If students couldn't think of a word or said something that didn't make sense, then they were out! The story went on until everyone was out. It was very fun! Have a nice evening! REMINDERS/UPDATES -please remember that tomorrow is the last day of school for students this week -please remember to send all winter gear to school

February 8th 2021

Today in math we started a unit on division. It is directly related to multiplication, so the students seemed to catch on quite quickly. Ask your child what the difference is between multiplication and division. In science we discussed animals that are extinct and why they become extinct. Our show what you know for this unit will be on Wednesday. We will review the concepts tomorrow. In language arts we did phonics and our journal entries. Some words that you could use as spelling words this week follow the "au" and "aw" spelling patterns. See the list below: - August - autumn - taught - caught - auto - sauce - lawn - Shaw - draw - awesome - awful - saw REMINDERS/UPDATES: - we emptied out our language arts duotangs today of items from the first term. Feel free to review the work. It does not need to be sent back to school. Math will be coming home within the next couple of days as well. - even though we are inside for recess and lunch this week due to temperatures, ...

February 3rd 2021

What a snowfall we received last night! Thank you to all parents for sending students to school with all appropriate winter gear. Unfortunately we didn't get to use it as we had indoor recess and lunch, but the kids did fabulous staying calm indoors. On Friday, we will be having our show what you know for multiplication. The students have been encouraged to use Mathletics to practice their multiplication facts over the next 2 evenings. They also have received a multiplication practice sheet. It does not need to be sent home, but is merely extra practice. Students will also be assessed on their knowledge of the following multiplication strategies: grouping method, repeated addition, arrays, and number line. In science we learned about some endangered species and what causes them to be endangered or extinct. We came up with some ideas of things that we can do as individuals to help preserve their habitats. We have finished the revision stage of our stories and will be starting good c...

February 2nd, 2021

Today was our second day of Fitness Monopoly in gym! It has been a blast! Ask your child about how to play. In social studies we discussed Peruvian food, sports, and music. The students were so focused and engaged! In math we began learning how to multiply using a number line. We did not get to do much paper type work for this today, so we will revisit it tomorrow. The show what you know for multiplication will be on Friday. We will then start division. In language arts, we wrote Kindness Cards for residents of Fish Creek Park continuing care centre. We discussed how it feels to be lonely, and how it makes us feel to know that we are doing something to lift someone else's spirits. The students did a phenomenal job and seemed to take the task very seriously.  We also began editing our work using CUPS. See the poster below! It was an action-packed day in terms of work, but the students did amazing! REMINDERS: - report cards are available for viewing online on Powerschool. - snowfall ...

February 1st 2021

Happy Monday! Today in science we began talking about endangered animals, how they become endangered, and what effects it can have on the rest of the environment. Ask your child about the coral reef, animal that live there, and how and why they are endangered. We kicked on Kindness Month with a virtual assembly with Mr. Miller and Mr. Magowan today, where they introduced the students to a couple of activities that we will be doing this week. Ask your child about these activities! REMINDERS/UPDATES: - Report cards are available for viewing today on Powerschool. Paper copies will not be going home this year. - Please send in Valentines as soon as they are ready, to make sure that they are here before Friday. I will send home a list of first names this week. Please remember that if they are not in the school by Friday. they will not be handed out to students. Please do not attach anything extra to the valentines.
