Can you believe that tomorrow is December?! Please remember that the virtual book fair is occurring now! Today we began using our rounding skills to estimate sums and differences when rounding to the nearest ten. We are still working on our rounding skills while also using them to estimate, so it has been a tough concept but we are working through it. On Friday after school, we took some time to separate our mealworms into cups and put each student's name on it. The students were thrilled to see that they had their own worms. We talked about expectations when caring for a living thing, and the students showed so much care and respect for their worms. We had to clean out their "cages" today to get rid of any decomposing food (we were attracting some fruit flies) and the students did an amazing job with that as well. For students who were uncomfortable holding or dealing with a worm, they were paired up with a student who was more comfortable to get the job completed. It w...

Today we spent a good portion of the morning working on our rounding mountains! Check them out below! Next week we will be using our rounding skills to estimate the sums and differences of three digit numbers! Have a great weekend!

November 26th 2020

Today in math we worked on rounding to the nearest hundred. The students caught on very quickly as they were very familiar with rounding to the nearest ten. Next we will work on rounding to add and subtract easier and estimate sums and differences. In science, we have noticed that our mealworms love to eat apples! We see so much movement when we put fresh apple pieces on the top! In social studies, we learned about Musical instruments and food in Tunisia, two components of their culture! In language arts, we learned a new word work activity, where we wrote the word three times in three different colours. We also completed the next chapter of Fudge-A-Mania and reviewed character traits. We are getting close to the end! REMINDERS/UPDATES -remember that the Virtual Book Fair is happening now!

November 25th 2020

Today in math, we did a little bit more practice on rounding to the nearest ten. We have proven ourselves to be rounding pros, and therefore will be moving onto rounding to the nearest hundred tomorrow. Once we have that mastered, we will begin estimating sums and differences up to1000, then move onto an entirely new unit! In science, we decided to try feeding our mealworms apples instead of carrots, and all of a sudden they started moving around like crazy and eating all of the apples! It was quite a sight to be seen! In language arts we worked on our five finger summarizing and completed the next chapter of Fudge-A-Mania! Reminders/Updates - please remember that the virtual book fair is happening NOW, and there will be free shipping tonight from 6pm-8pm on all orders!

November 24th 2020

Today in math we continued to work on rounding to the nearest ten. By the end of their independent work today they had a great grasp of the concept. Next, we will work on rounding to the nearest hundred. In science, we started out our day by looking at our mealworms. We noticed that they weren't really moving, and got a little worried. After a little bit of research, I found out that they are NOCTURNAL! Phewph! We discussed what nocturnal means and discussed that some worms may unfortunately die, as not every single one will make it through to the end of it's life cycle. We also discussed how animals are classified (or grouped). We discussed the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates, and broke the groups down further as well. Ask your child how we know that certain animals are "mammals!" In language arts, we continued working on Fudge-A-Mania and practiced some "five finger summarizing". They did great!  Updates/Reminders - the virtual book fair b...

November 23rd 2020

We introduced 50 new friends into our class today! (50 new mealworm friends, that is). Check out the picture below! Today in science we began learning about the needs of animals which help them to move throughout their life cycle. We are very excited about this unit and can't wait to learn about it with our mealworms! We began working on rounding today in math. It was a new concept for the students, so it will require some practice! Today we were working on rounding two and three digit numbers to the nearest tens place. In phonics, we worked on the short a and short i sound that follow the a_e or i_e pattern in a word. See the list below for examples of words you could work on with your child! bake grade female parade place shade kite side white write silence time

Please book a virtual parent teacher conference if you have not yet done so using your MyCBE account. You will receive a link in your email to access the Microsoft Teams meeting. Your link will only be active for 5 minutes before the meeting time. However, I would suggest attempting to sign into your meeting at that 5 minute mark so that you have time to play around if necessary. You will be put into a waiting room or "lobby" until I admit you into the conference. Please remember that tomorrow is a day off for students due to Parent Teacher conferences.  Today we did our show what you know for our science unit on rocks and minerals. We played review Jeopardy beforehand, and then did our test after lunch. Next week we will begin our unit on Life Cycles of Animals.  We got the computers this morning and did some addition and subtraction work on Mathletics. Next week we will be moving into estimating and rounding, and after that, we will start to work on graphing. Have a great e...

November 18th 2020

Please sign up for a virtual parent teacher conference using your MyCBE account. There are still a few openings on Thursday evening and lots available on Friday in the early afternoon. There is no school on Friday, November 20th due to parent teacher conferences.  Tomorrow we will be having a show what you know for our science unit on Rocks and Minerals. This has been a heavy week for show what you know's, but the students have done a great job during our information reviews in class and have been applying their knowledge very well. Once we wrap up this unit, we will be beginning our unit on Life Cycles of Animals the following week. In language arts, we have continued to work through our Fudge-A-Mania novel study. Today we made a prediction about what would happen in the chapter, and gave three reasons why we predicted what we did. Then, we read the chapter and answered the Five W questions about the chapter (who, what, where, when, and why). In social studies, we learned about Tu...

November 17th 2020

Please sign up for a virtual parent teacher conference time for November 19th in the PM or November 20th in the morning/early afternoon.  Once you have signed up, you will receive a link to join the conference on your designated day and time. There are still plenty of times available on Thursday starting at 9:15am. Thank you to all parents who have already signed up. We have a show what you know for subtraction coming up tomorrow. While the students should be quite familiar with this by now, it may be a good idea to complete a few of the "extra practice" questions that went home last week as a review. Students learned about Tunisian clothing today in social studies. We learned that some people wear very traditional clothing based on their religion, and others dress very "Western" and "modern".  In gym we have started our Volleyball unit, where we are working on our "sets". It has been a tricky skill to learn, but its coming along! Tomorrow, we wi...

November 16th, 2020

Tomorrow in math, we will be having a "show what you know" for addition strategies. We did some review today, and the students seemed well prepared. The following day, we will complete a "show what you know" for subtraction strategies, which they also seem very well prepared for! We are wrapping up our science unit on Rocks and Minerals and will be moving onto the Life Cycle of Animals unit next week. Later this week, we will have a "show what you know" to wrap up the unit. Today we discussed the final topic of Rocks and Minerals which is layers of soil, and will review this in the coming days. In language arts, we completed a phonics lesson on silent letters. The students found some of the combinations of letters (like "gh) quite tricky, however by the end we seemed to have a good understanding. We then wrote our journal about our weekends.  NOTES/REMINDERS - please sign up for a parent teacher virtual conference this week. They are taking place on T...

November 13th 2020

Take a look below at our plasticine Earths that we made today! Ask your child about the different layers. The most exciting part as definitely cutting them open to see what they look like on the inside! REMINDERS/NOTES - please sign up for a parent teacher conference on your MyCBE account. They are on the evening of November 19th 2020 and during the day on November 20th 2020.

November 12th 2020

I hope that everyone had a great Remembrance Day and enjoyed some quality time. It sounds like most students got to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Today in math we continued to practice expanded form subtraction with regrouping. This seems to be a strategy that the students are quite comfortable with. In language arts, we spent some time coming up with character traits for a particular character that we had in our heads. We talked about describing characters based on their outside appearance, inside thoughts and feelings, and behaviours. Take a look at our list of adjectives that we came up with!

November 10th, 2020

We had our Remembrance Day assembly this morning. In honour of Remembrance Day, we did some activities today including making a tissue poppy and writing about why it is important to recognize the day. The students were very respectful during the assembly and seemed to understand the importance. NOTES/REMINDERS: - there is no school tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11th, 2020. - please send all appropriate winter gear to school with students, even if it seems nice outside.

November 9th 2020

Today in math we learned a new subtraction strategy called "expanded form subtraction". In this strategy, we have to put our place value knowledge to the test in order to get the correct answer. The students caught onto this strategy very quickly. At some point this week, I will begin sending home extra practice for subtraction, as well as addition and subtraction basic facts. In science, we began talking about the layers of the earth and what they are made of. Ask your child what the four layers are, and what we find on the crust of the Earth! REMINDERS/NOTES: - tomorrow, we will be collecting poppy donations. If you wish to make a donation, please send coins or cash to school with your child tomorrow. - there is no school on Wednesday, November 11th due to Remembrance Day.

November 6th 2020

Today we continued to work on three-digit addition with regrouping. I will be sending extra practice home in the coming days (early next week) to help students apply their knowledge and solidify their understanding. It does not need to turned in to me, however completing the extra practice is strongly recommended. We finished our rock observations today. There were a couple of tests on each rock that we could not do as a whole group, so student have been pulled at quiet reading times to complete these tests in small groups. Some students have not been called yet to complete these tests and will do so next week. We did a desk clean out today and had some time to complete catch up work after gym. Have a great weekend, and stay warm!

November 5th 2020

Today in math we did lots of practice subtraction using regrouping on our white board and creating our own questions with playing cards. By the end of the class the students had a much better grasp on subtraction with regrouping. We will continue to practice daily to solidify the skill. In social studies we discussed the factors that make up a person's culture. We then began talking about one aspect of the culture, schools, in Tunisia and how they are the same or different from Canada. Turns out that there are a lot of similarities! In language arts we spent some time discussing character traits. We will continue this discussion in the coming days and next week. Have a great weekend!

November 4th, 2020

Happy Wednesday! Today in math we continued working on subtraction with regrouping. It was a tricky concept for many of us that we need to borrow from the various columns to make the subtraction possible. We will continue to work on this throughout the next couple of weeks, going over various strategies and ways of thinking about the subtraction to help with understanding and solidifying the process of subtraction. In science, we continued working through the rock kits, making observations and doing a variety of tests to determine the properties of the rocks. We only have four rocks left, so hopefully we will have completed this process by the end of the week. In language arts, we created tongue twisters out of our spelling words. Some were very hard to say. We also continued onto chapter three of our novel study of "Fudge-A-Mania" by Judy Blume. It has been very fun and the students are enjoying the story. Today we made predictions and gave three reasons for our prediction o...

November 3rd 2020

Today in math we began working on three digit subtraction with regrouping. We will continue to work on this over the next couple of weeks using a variety of strategies. Today, students worked with their white boards to draw their base ten blocks and show the regrouping and subtraction that way. Next, we will work on the traditional method of borrowing from the various columns. In social studies, we continued talking about rights and responsibilities and how each right that we have comes with a variety of responsibilities. In language arts, we learned a new word work activity which involved making a comic strip with at least five of our words from this week. The students were encouraged to make it as silly or as serious as they would like and they had a great time! I think it may be the favourite word work activity so far! We began a novel study today for the story Fudge-A-Mania by Judy Blume. We visualized what we thought the story would be about based on the title, and then checked if...

November 2nd, 2020

Wow! November already! It is hard to believe that two months of this school year are already behind us. At this point in the year, it is very important that the safety precautions are reviewed regularly at home and at school so that we do not become complacent. We have done an AMAZING job of following these precautions so far and need to keep doing so. Reminders of WHY these precautions are necessary are important too to keep it fresh in students' minds. Today we created individual writing goals that we glued into our writing duotangs as constant reminders of what we want to improve on. Within our goal setting, we also needed to write how we planned to accomplish our goal and what the teacher could do to get us there. It was very informative. Ask your child what goal they came up with! In math, we learned a new strategy called the compensation strategy. It was a little bit hard to get used to, but we seemed to have it figured out by the end of the lesson. We will continue to work o...
