Thank you to all families for your cooperation in sending easy costumes to school and doing makeup before school. While Halloween did not look the same for us this year at Woodlands, we were definitely able to make the most of it and have a great time regardless! Students enjoyed their special treats this afternoon and a couple of small Halloween activities. We watched our assembly today that we have worked so hard over the last few weeks to create work for. The students all did FABULOUS, and we received many compliments from around the school.  Have a great time and stay safe this weekend, however you choose to celebrate!

October 28th 2020

Our Halloween festivities will be taking place tomorrow. Our morning is expected to be completely normal and following regular routines, and our festivities will occur in the afternoon. Our virtual assembly will occur tomorrow in the afternoon as well. The assembly is pre-recorded and will be broadcast within the school only. Please read below for Halloween celebration expectations. 1. Please have students wear clothes that they can put their costume on over top of. Bathrooms are not going to be available for students to change out of their clothes and into a costume as we have very limited capacity.  2. Face paint and makeup should go on before school.  3. Please leave any important items for the costume that could easily be lost at home. We cannot accommodate entrance into the building if items are forgotten at school.  4. No weapons are permitted. 5. Masks must be worn with costumes in compliance with the safety regulations. 6. Feel free to send a special snack to scho...

Tomorrow will be our second SLA, this time in math.  We had a lockdown drill today. The kids did a great job of moving to the designated place in the classroom and being nice and quiet! In math, we learned a new mental math strategy called "front-end addition". It goes against the traditional way of adding numbers, but definitely helps to increase knowledge of place value. Ask your child to show you an example! In social studies, we learned about rights and responsibilities. We learned that our responsibilities sometimes change based on what community we are in (school, at home, in Calgary, or in the world).  REMINDERS:  Photo retakes are tomorrow morning. Please send a note to school with your child or send the envelope of proofs back that went home last week. Thanks!

Ee had our first SLA first thing in the morning. Today was the reading portion. Most students finished, and for those that did not there will be more time allotted during the week. After the SLA, students worked on Raz Kids if they finished early. On Wednesday, we will be doing the math portion. In language arts, we practiced he ending blends "ft", "lt", "mp", "nt", and "nk". We then did our journals. Students looked through their old journal entries to see how they have improved over the lasts 6-7 weeks. We had extra copies of a worksheet that we did in class today. I offered them out to students to take home if they wanted extra practice. Many students wanted to take them home, so that is why they came home today. Other students asked if they could please take the "challenge sheet" home. If they have chosen to take it home and it is too hard for them, please note that the knowledge in the challenge one is an EXTENSION and no...

October 22nd 2020

Happy Thursday! The weather has not been the best over the last couple of days but we are bundling up before we head outside which is a huge help in keeping us warm! Even I wore my snow pants outside today! We had the computers this morning, where we research two organizations that help out in the world: UNICEF and Canadian Red Cross. We learned about who they help, where they help, and what they do (most do A LOT!). We will be using this information for our virtual assembly next week. In math, we did some practice with addition using regrouping, and then were able to play a math game in partners.  We learned a new word work activity so that we can eventually start doing "rotations" through different activities during our literacy block. REMINDERS/NOTES Photos came home yesterday. We are not accepting cash orders this year, but you can order and pay online. Photo retake day is October 28th if you are not happy with the first set. We will have having an in-class Halloween cele...

October 21st 2020

Today was "Take Me Outside Day!" Despite the cold and snowy weather, we did head outside for our gym period and made some snowy creations. The snow wasn't perfect for packing, but we made do anyways! Please ensure your child is coming to school with the appropriate gear for winter! We continued discussing quality of life today and how we can be helpful to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We discussed how we can help people in our schools, our community and around the world. We then made posters to demonstrate how we can help, and this will be another item that we will be sharing at our virtual assembly. In math, we continued practicing addition with regrouping using base ten blocks. The students are becoming much more proficient! Please make sure you're utilizing Mathletics as it has a lot of very useful practice! REMINDERS/NOTES: - school photos came home today. We are not accepting cash orders this year, only online orders. - photo retakes are on October...

October 20th 2020

Today we completed our good copies of our writing about the things that we are fortunate to have living in Canada. Our focus over the next couple of weeks will continue to be quality of life and how it differs across parts of the world. We began talking about the properties of rocks and minerals today. The properties we are mostly paying attention to are: lustre (how a rock reflects light - shiny or dull?), hardness (do you get powder if you scratch it?), colour, and texture. We practiced logging into Google Classroom today at school. It was a challenge, however all students were able to log in successfully and complete the assigned activity. After that, we went on Mathletics and completed a couple of addition activities. REMINDERS/NOTES - Forms went home today regarding computerized assessments that will be occurring next week called SLA's. Please read the form. It has also been sent to families via school messenger from the office.

October 19th 2020

Thank you for sending all appropriate winter gear to school with your child! It was a chilly one today, but the students had everything that they needed to stay warm outdoors.  Today, we did some writing about things that we are fortunate to have in Canada. We learned that our quality of life here in Canada is quite high in comparison to some other places, and that we have a lot of luxuries living here! Tomorrow we will write our good copies, and draw a picture to go along with it. This will be one of the options that students have to present to their peers at our Google Meets virtual assembly. We worked on three letter beginning blends today in language arts, including the blends "scr", "spl", "spr", and "str". We also did our journal writing about what we did on our weekends. In math, we learned about addition using regrouping with our base ten blocks. We will continue to work on this over the next couple of weeks, as well as learn strategies t...

October 16th 2020

It's Friday! Another week has come and gone so quickly. Grade 3s are doing the October assembly, which will be done using a virtual platform and watched by all students on Google Meet. We are beginning to prepare some material for our assembly. Our assembly is social studies focused. We are beginning to look at quality of life comparisons between developing and developed countries.  Our assembly will encompass activities from the following: - we are fortunate that in Canada, we have... - we can help others in our schools, communities, and the world by... - when we help people, it makes us feel... - there are organizations that help less developed countries... (research). You can help at home by discussing these ideas with your child.  Take a look below at the work we did today. We looked at 6 images up on the smart board or different aspects of developing countries (water supply, schools, hospitals, homes, etc), wrote down what we noticed about the picture, and how it is diffe...

October 15th 2020

Thank you so much for your support in sending students to school with warmer gear to keep them warm outside at recess and at lunch. It made a big difference today having all their outdoor gear and they were much warmer.  Today we did a "show what you know" for place value. The students seem to have grasped it quite well. We will be moving on to addition and subtraction strategies next week. In language arts, we finished up with our My Mouth is a Volcano work. We then read the story "What Do You Do With A Problem" and listed out big, medium, and small problems. BIG problems require adult support IMMEDIATELY, MEDIUM problems might require adult support but it is not necessary to interrupt or be stressed, SMALL problems require no adult support, and we can deal with them on our own. We are going to be continuing this conversation in the coming days as it relates to the Zones of Regulation (red, green, yellow, and blue). Happy Thursday, have a great evening!

October 14th 2020

Happy Wednesday! I was away for the morning today for an appointment. I received feedback that the students were amazing and very polite. This makes me so happy! The reward for such positive feedback was a little bit of "free time" at the end of the day where the students used their math boxes and played some games. We got lucky with sunshine and nice weather well into October. We have seen a change in the weather in recent days, and it is important that kids are coming to school dressed for the weather. Please see a list of suggestions below: - warm/rainproof jacket - snowpants (if necessary) - gloves (the mornings are cold even when the afternoon is warm!) - toque - scarf - waterproof footwear - an extra pair of socks in the backpack It is still recommended that an extra mask be sent to school each day. This is especially important now, because if a mask gets dropped outside, it is likely to get wet. Have a nice evening!

October 13th 2020

I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing long weekend! In math, we worked on regrouping in place value (when there is more than 10 in the ones, tens, an hundreds, you have to "regroup" to make the number make sense). Ask your child about the activity we did with the cards and their math journals today. In social studies, we began learning about the land in Tunisia. When looking at Google Earth, we noticed that the Northern point of Tunisia is all green (so it must be forest or something!), the more central areas are mountainous and the south eastern corner is desert land. Ask your child what else they learned! We learned and practiced our s-blends today, which include an s followed by another consonant (sc, sl, st, etc). Have a nice evening!

October 8th 2020

Happy Thursday! There is no school tomorrow, Friday October 9th or Monday October 12th. Check out our "Thankful Pumpkins" that also came home with students today.  We continued working on "My Mouth is a Volcano" to try to control our blurting tendencies. We brainstormed appropriate times to share our thoughts and also talked about how it makes us feel when we are interrupted or feel like we can't get our thoughts out because of someone else. In social studies, we did a little introduction of Tunisia and labelled a map. We learned that the capital city of Tunisia is called Tunis! They also have an ancient city called Carthage where people do not live anymore. Happy Thanksgiving, and have a wonderful long weekend!

October 7th 2020

Today was picture day! The students looked so sweet in all their picture day outfits! We made place value towers using 15 place value blocks today. We chose any 15 blocks we wanted and calculated the total value. Ask your child what their tower was worth. Check out the photo below of our new place value wall. In language arts, we listened to the story called "My Mouth is a Volcano" and started coming up with some strategies for how to stop ourselves from "erupting!". We took some time today to learn how to properly organize our desks. This year, we have to keep all of our belongings in our desks, so they are becoming quite messy quite quickly! Remember, there is no school on Friday as it is a PD Day.

October 6th 2020

PICTURE DAY IS TOMORROW. We will be taking individual photos only. Photos must be ordered online this year. Cash and cheques will not be accepted. Check out the photos below of our "Place Value Donuts" that we worked on today. We had a blast! In social studies, we practiced labelling our seven continents on a map and coloured it. We also looked at the symbols on the map and tried to figure out what they meant.  We got to make our very own special bookmarks today as a special treat for being great listeners!

October 5th 2020

Today was an amazing day full of learning! We started our day with math, where we practiced writing numbers in expanded form, word form, and standard form. We then worked on a "colour by number" page that used place value to determine which colour you would need to use. In science, we sorted rocks based on their attributes into the categories sedimentary,  metamorphic and igneous. We will review it as a class tomorrow to make sure that all of our types of rocks are in the correct places! In language arts, we worked on our "r" blends today (i.e. words that begin with br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr). The students practiced spelling words that begin with various r blends. We also wrote a journal entry about what we did on our weekends.  REMINDERS: Picture day is on Wednesday, October 7th. We will only be taking individual student photos, and no group photos this year to comply with health regulations. Have a nice evening!

October 2nd, 2020

Due to technically difficulties, I was unable to complete a blog post yesterday. Sorry to everyone who was awaiting the nightly update! Luckily everything is back up and running correctly for me today. It is hard to believe that it is October already. We are starting to see all the leaves change colour and fall to the ground, but I am so happy that the warm weather is sticking around for now! Check out the fall trees that we created today. It was a fun and quick little project that went home with kids today. Today we had our Terry Fox Run and virtual assembly, which was put on by the grade fours. This year is the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope! To commemorate 40 years, the class came up with a list of 40 adjectives to describe Terry Fox. Take a look at our list below. REMINDERS/UPDATES Picture day is on October 7th. Individual photos will be taken, however group photos are not permitted at this time.
