In math, we played our place value building cards with our math game again! I realized that I totally forgot to add the photos that I intended to yesterday, so please check below for them today! Today is Orange Shirt Day! I am so impressed with the amount of students that incorporated orange into their outfits today! We had a little assembly and did a small writing activity this morning to commemorate this day. Ask your child what the word "resilient" means! In language arts, we continued to write our Alexander's Bad Day stories. Reminders/Notes: Raz-Kids and Mathletics cards came home today. Google Classroom sign-ins are on the back of the Raz-Kids card. Please make sure you grab it out of your child's backpack and keep it in a safe place! Please note that Raz-Kids levels are not an exact correlation to the assessments we do in class. I am still working my way through reading assessments and will update levels as I go. Scholastic book orders went home today. It is be...

We had a blast this morning working with decks of cards, our mini whiteboards and base ten blocks to create numbers up to around 500. Please check the photos below to see what we were up to! In social studies, we kept working on our "rainbow map" where students draw things that are near, quite near, further away, and a long way away, which involved drawing things they can see in Woodlands school, from the Woodlands school field, in the community of Woodlands, and other landmarks in Calgary that a person would need to drive to. They have done a great job so far! In language arts we continued planning for our "Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" story. Some students began working on their rough drafts. REMINDERS/NOTES - we are collecting online and cash donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. We will be doing our run on Friday during our gym period. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but feel free if you wish to! - tomorrow is Orange Shirt ...

Today we began our new math unit on place value! We talked about ones, tens, and hundreds blocks. We also discussed how digits in a number have different values based on which place they are in. For example, in the number 18, the value of 8 is in fact 8, but in the number 81, the value of 8 is 80 since it is in the tens place. The students seemed to have a good understanding of this already and we will continue to build on it in the coming weeks. We also had a blast today learning about the 3 different types of rocks. Ask your child about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, and how they are formed. The students were full of thought provoking questions, some of which we had to research the answers to! Ask about the volcano eruption videos. In language arts, we worked on a new phonics skill, L-Blends. These are words that have one of the following at the beginning of the word: cl, bl, fl, gl, pl, sl. The students wrote their journal entry about their week and circled all their L...

Looking forward to chatting with you at parent teacher teleconferences! Please make sure you have read the information that came home via email before your scheduled conference. Please note that we do have a strict 15 minute time limit. Any matters that go beyond that time frame will require a separate conference time. Please be available to answer your phone at your scheduled conference time. It will be coming from a blocked or private number. We will attempt to call twice. Thank you for your cooperation! Have a great weekend!

September 23rd 2020

Happy Wednesday! Remember that parent teacher conferences are coming up tomorrow. Please be available at your scheduled time tomorrow so that we can stick to our 15 minute time frame! Today we practiced logging into our Google Classrooms and doing a math activity. It was a very difficult task for some. Please practice logging in with your child a couple of times to get them in the hang of the process. Thank you to everyone who provided passwords for Google Classroom! It made our process go much smoother :).

September 22nd 2020

Happy first day of Fall! Today in math we continued to work on decreasing patterns. The students now have a solid understanding of increasing and decreasing patterns. We will wrap this unit up later this week and move onto place value.  In science we continued discussing rocks and minerals, and in social studies we began a new mapping activity. Ask your child about NEAR, QUITE NEAR, AND FURTHER AWAY, and what belongs in each section. We finished up our Best Part of Me Writing project today. The students did a great job of identifying the part of themselves that they believe is the best, and giving a detailed description of why. We discussed Fall, and what we might see and do in fall. Students had the option of creating a PUMPKINS acrostic poem, or coming up with a descriptive word for a pumpkin using each letter of the alphabet. REMINDERS: VERY IMPORTANT - - tomorrow we will be logging into the student laptops and getting some practice on our Google Classrooms. It is VERY IMPORTANT...

September 21st 2020

Happy Monday! Today in math we began working on DECREASING patterns (patterns that start large and get smaller with each term). The students did an excellent job of determining what the terms should look like when using shapes and numbers. In science we created a "KWL" chart about rocks and minerals. KWL stands for: what do you KNOW, what do you WANT TO KNOW, and what have you LEARNED. The students already have so much knowledge and came up with some very interesting questions that we can focus on throughout the unit. I am so excited to get started! Take a look below at our class KWL chart. In language arts, we focused on the phonics rule of "hard c" (like a k) and (soft c) like an s. We practiced spelling different words with those sounds and identifying them in words. We also did our weekly journal entry about what we did on our weekends, and the students focused on punctuation, capitals, adjectives, varying sentence beginnings, and writing 7-8 sentences. They did...

September 18th 2020

Our first full week of the year has come to an end! Today in math we continued working on increasing patterns involving number and shapes, and will work on decreasing patterns next week. We continued working on on Best Part of Me project today. The students worked on their good copies of their writing where we made sure that they included proper capitalization, punctuation, and varying sentence beginnings. There isn't too much to show for the project today, but we should be wrapping it up on Monday and we will have our final projects completed! Next week, we will dive deeper into Rocks and Minerals, learning about the difference between the two, as well as the three types of rocks. Have a great weekend!

September 17th 2020

In math, we reviewed our knowledge of increasing shape and number patterns. Ask your child about the flip books we created! In science, we shared the rocks that we brought to school and also described them using all of our senses (except for taste, of course!). In language arts, we continued on with our The Best Part of Me project by taking our ideas from our web and putting them onto a cohesive outline, as well as editing for punctuation, capitalization, juicy words, and varying sentence beginnings. This morning we had a virtual Welcome Back assembly! Ask your child what that looked like with the new health and safety guidelines. Have a nice evening!

September 16th 2020

Today in math we continued working on increasing number patterns, and the students seem to have a much better handle on the concept today! They are getting much better at stating the rule of the pattern and extending it. In social studies, we began to complete our own classroom maps. We made a legend, created our symbols, added a compass rose and made sure our classroom was accurately portrayed on the map! In Language Arts, we began a project called The Best Part of Me. We read the book, chose the best part of ourselves, and created a web with four reasons why we chose the part that we did. Each student had unique and interesting reasons! I can't wait to see the final result and continue the process! Please see below for pictures of some classroom maps in progress and All About Me webs. REMINDERS/NOTES - students should bring a rock to school tomorrow for some activities related to our rocks and minerals science unit. - please return any outstanding forms and library books.

September 15th 2020

Today in math, we worked on increasing number patterns. This will definitely be a skill that we will work on over the next couple of days! Students were required to write the rule the following way: ex) start at 10, increase by 5 each time. The most challenging part was following the number sequence to understand how the pattern was changing. We will keep working on it! In science, we read the story called "If You Find a Rock". Students wrote about the typ of rock that they would most like to find. They were given homework to find a rock that catches their eye and bring it to school for Thursday! They can bring it tomorrow if they find one tonight! One rock only please! In language arts we wrote an "I Am..." Poem to kick off our "Personal Narrative" unit. We have lots of exciting projects coming up soon! Today we had our first fire drill of the year. Students did an AMAZING job of getting out of the building quickly and following all social distancing and...

September 14th, 2020

Happy Monday! Today was our first Monday of the year for students! This morning, we finished up our pattern fish. Some students still have some work to do, but quite a few are completed! Tomorrow, we will begin working on number increasing patterns, rather than shapes. In language arts, we began this year's spelling program. Rather than having spelling go back and forth, we will be spending some time each Monday reviewing various spelling concepts. Today we reviewed digraphs such as th, ch, sh, wh, and ph and applied them to our journal writing. In social studies we began working on a classroom map, assigning symbols to different parts of our classroom and ensuring our compass rose was faced the proper way. Students will soon have the opportunity to work on their very own classroom map to practice their skills. Students were able to choose a book today to keep in their desks to read for the week. At the end of each week they will be turned in, "quarantined" over the weeke...

September 11th, 2020

We spent a good chunk of our day today working on "Pattern Fish" to help us understand increasing patterns more thoroughly. We read the book pattern fish, identified the patterns on each page, and then made a "rough copy" of our very own personal Pattern Fish pages! Students were required to ensure they had one ABCD pattern, an ABBA pattern, 3 increasing patterns, and at least 5 colours. See the photos below to observe our process! REMINDERS/NOTES: Please accept the Google Classroom invitation that went through to your child's @educbe Gmail account. This Google Classroom will be utilized for students who are absent for an extended period of time due to our new health and safety protocols. Thank you for following the health and safety protocols! Please sign and return all of the forms that came home last week.

September 10th 2020

In math, our focus was on increasing patterns. We used our personal whiteboards to extend patterns and write the rules for that pattern. We also did a practice page on this, and the students did very well. In social studies we continued working on mapping, by completing a cut-and-paste activity for the cardinal directions of a compass rose. In writing, we used our best, juiciest descriptive vocabulary to describe a picture of a fall tree, and then we wrote a paragraph as a class. The students then used what we did to create their own paragraph about a different photo. Their goal was to use as much descriptive vocabulary as possible as well as to vary their sentence beginnings to make their writing more interesting. REMINDERS/NOTES Please sign and send back any outstanding forms that went home late last week. Outstanding library books should also be returned, and notices for this went home earlier this week. Thank you to everyone who has returned them already! Please accept the invitati...

We had a great day of learning today! This morning, we continued working on increasing patterns by extending, creating, and writing a rule for them.  In social studies, we continued learning about maps. We read the story called "Mapping Penny's World" and then talked about the elements of a map, including the legend, symbols, title, labels, and compass rose.  We went outside today to do some writing using our senses. We made notes about what we saw, smelled, heard and felt while sitting quietly outside. Please see photos at the bottom of this post! REMINDERS/NOTES: Today, room 14 students received an invitation on the @educbe email addresses to join our Google Classroom. This classroom will be utilized for any students who are absent or expected to be absent for a longer period of time given our new health and safety regulations. Please refer to it if your child is away! There is no content posted yet. Please remember to send an extra mask to school with your child in ca...

September 8th 2020

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing long weekend! We had a great day of learning today.  We started out our day with a grade 2 patterning review to see what the kids know. They have a very strong concept of how to create, extend, and describe a pattern. We are now going to move onto "growing patterns" in the coming days to build on their patterning skills.  In social studies, we began learning about mapping and the elements of a map. We briefly discussed legends, symbols, types of land, roads, pathways, etc. We used Google Earth to find places that are important to us such as our homes, our school, Calaway Park, Stampede grounds, etc.  We discussed cold and flu symptoms, how to avoid spreading germs, and how to properly wash our hands to avoid the spread. Check your child's backpack for the handwashing tips that they wrote out today. We also wrote a journal entry about what we did on our weekends. Have a nice evening!

September 4th 2020

Reminders - There is no school on Monday, September 7th, 2020. On Tuesday, September 8th we will enter the school beginning at 8:20am. Students will take their shoes off at their assigned doors, sanitize their hands, and find something quiet to do at their desks. - Students are reminded to bring a baggy to store their masks when they are not wearing them. Please continue to practice PHYSICAL DISTANCING with your child at home. This seems to be the hardest one to follow when the kids are so excited to be with their friends! - Feel free to send a pencil case, a book, and a pencil sharpener to school with your child. - Please send back Demographic forms that went home yesterday with signatures. Please review all the information and make any corrections that are necessary, and return the forms regardless of if there are any changes. - See you Tuesday! Have a wonderful long weekend!

First Day Back for Everyone!

We had an AMAZING first day back with all of the students! They did such a great job of following all of the expectations and wearing their masks when they are supposed to. I am SO impressed! Great job grade threes! We went over the expectations today as a class again, and completed a chart about behaviours that are safe and unsafe at school. This morning, we did a bit of math (My Life in Numbers) and also worked on our "All About Me Books" where we wrote about our families. We had music with Ms. Bachert and in gym we did relay races and animal races (like bear crawl race and snake race!). This afternoon, we went over what the writing expectations were in grade two and the kids wrote about what they did on their summer breaks. They were challenged to do their BEST writing that would impress the reader! They did an amazing job of staying quiet and focused while they wrote. Finally, we spent some time finishing up our Behind My Mask self portraits and doing catch up work. I am ...

Day 2 of Staggered Entry

We had another fabulous day today! Please read the previous post for a look at what we have done over the last two days. I didn't want to spoil it yesterday for the kids coming in today, so I did not post about the art that we were working on! Ask your child about their "Behind the Mask Self-Portrait". They chose words to describe themselves and decorated a mask to suit them. The art is not complete yet, but I will post photos tomorrow of the work! They have all done a fantastic job! See everyone tomorrow, outside in our regular meeting spot at 8:30am. Have a great evening!

Welcome to Grade 3!

We had an awesome start to our year today! It was so lovely to see everyone's smiling faces who attended school today, and I am looking forward to seeing the remainder of students tomorrow! Students were reminded about safety precautions to be taken at school including the following: - remaining physically distant in the classroom, hallways, and outdoors. - proper mask wearing techniques, such as cleaning hands before and after putting it on, not touching it, not playing with it, and covering your nose and mouth. - staying seated where possible in the classroom. - using the proper entrances, exits, and washrooms. It is required that all toys remain at home. Please check your child's backpack for toys before they head out the door. Consideration may be given to pencil cases/school supplies and books. Please send a healthy and nutritious snack and lunch to school with your child each day to provide them with the sustenance to make it through the day! Please include as little tras...
